Belgrade - During their talks in Belgrade, the Minister for Kosovo and Metohija Goran Bogdanovic and Head of UNMIK Lamberto Zannier agreed that unilateral moves by either side could only destabilize situation in the province and that dialogue is the only way of solving the problem.
Talking to the Ambassador Zannier, Minister Bogdanovic noted lack of UN presence in the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue so far, as well as that while Belgrade would keep insisting on the World Organizations having a role, it is also up to UN to advocate for themselves and their role in the said dialogue.
Minister for Kosovo and Metohija reaffirmed the long ago stated position of Belgrade that the United Nations represent the overall authority as regards the international presence in Kosovo and Metohija, and that they must act in accordance with their vested mandate. Excessive sidelining of the United Nations can only produce adverse effect, given the trust that the UN inspires, especially in the north.
Mr. Zanier assured Bogdanovic that UNMIK would continue its work in accordance with UNSC Resolution 1244 in all areas, including external representation. Also, the Minister for Kosovo and Metohija has expressed dissatisfaction with the operation of UN Office in the north, insisting that it must start doing some work and cooperating with the local self-administrations. The two interlocutors discussed how to improve its efficiency.
Head of UNMIK Lamberto Zanier and Minister Bogdanovic agreed that contacts between Belgrade and UNMIK must be stepped up in order to clarify and remove all concerns and problems involved in the cooperation so far.
